San Francisco Dentures Vs. All-on-4

Over the last few decades, dental technology has advanced by incredible leaps and bounds. When it comes to dentures, in particular, even the most modern, latest, and greatest dentures of today pale in comparison to dental implants. Although we will concede that today’s dentures are better than those that your grandparents wore – but it’s almost like comparing an old-fashioned, antique typewriter to whatever technology you happen to be reading this on.

Despite some advancements in removable dentures, they are becoming less and less common as more patients realize the amazing benefits of the All-on-4 procedure over traditional dentures. San Francisco patients that undergo this fantastic, cutting-edge procedure are usually able to eat dinner the same night with a brand new set of permanent, natural-looking teeth. If you are a San Francisco resident and want to learn how you can ditch the dentures once and for all, you should take the time to call SF Oral Surgery today at (415) 776-6710.

Why Patients Love the All-on-4 Procedure More Than Dentures

San Francisco is a fast-paced city and having a fantastic, straight, bright white smile definitely changes how you feel about your appearance. If you have stopped smiling in public for fear of showing a toothless grin, or worse yet, you have an uncomfortable and unpredictable set of dentures than you are a great candidate for All-on-4 dental implants. Even if you have the best dentures available; the fact remains that modern dentures are still removable and have severe limitations. Simple, everyday things like chewing and speaking are often difficult for men and women who wear dentures. Even though dentures are designed to mimic natural teeth, by design they just can’t. “Why?” – You ask? Well, the answer is simple: because dentures have no “roots.” Dental implants are the only teeth replacement option that, for all intensive purposes, replicate your natural teeth.

All-on-4 dental implants provide you with permanent, solid, custom-made teeth that deliver identical chewing power, speaking comfort, and facial structure as the natural teeth you were born with. And the All-on-4 procedure also prevents bone loss in the jaw. Some of San Francisco’s residents are surprised to learn that what provides them with strong jaw bones and the facial contour they provide are the roots of their teeth. Once a tooth is lost, there is nothing in place to stimulate jaw bone growth. Eventually, a process called resorption occurs which shrinks the jaw like an apple that’s been left outside for too long. “Floating” dentures on top of your gums is not the same as placing permanent anchors directly into the jaw bone.

Are You Ready to Smile with Pride?

For much of this article, we have focused on the medical and functional benefits of All-on-4 dental implants. But we would be remiss if we neglected to mention the fantastic psychological benefits that our San Fransico patients enjoy – possibly for the first time ever. If you have been self-conscious and embarrassed about your smile – those days are over! Imagine the thrill of going out to dinner, visiting with your friends, and let’s not forget those intimate situations, without having to be preoccupied with your teeth – or lack thereof. Being able to flash a dazzling,  natural-looking smile is priceless. Our patients report an increase in their self-esteem which in turn effects other important aspects of their lives such as their social lives, careers, and even their love lives.

What Can I Expect During All-on-4 Procedure?

The All-on-4 procedure should only be performed by a certified oral surgeon. While other dentists may claim they are qualified, only an oral surgeon has the additional training and experience to give you the spectacular, safe results you want. The surgery requires 2.5 hours per arch, and some San Francisco patients will need to make 2 appointments to have the procedure completed.

During the procedure, patients are given IV anesthesia. Because this type of anesthesia is strong enough to make you completely comfortable and unaware of your surgical experience, it takes a while to wear off. So during your consultation, you will be informed that you will need to arrange for a driver who can take you to your appointment and then drive you home afterward. Once the IV anesthesia takes effect, our doctors will skillfully place 4 different permanent dental implants directly into your jaw bone. These implants act as anchors that your oral surgeon can then attach your brand new teeth to.

What Is the All-on to-4 Recovery Like?

Following their procedure, many SF Oral Surgery patients can begin eating a soft diet like soups and yogurts. After a few weeks, patients can start to eat their favorite foods again. You will also need to return to our San Francisco office so we can monitor your progress. Typically our patient’s are healed after six to eight months. Your surgeon will inform you, contingent on how well your All-on-4 implants are healing when you can begin brushing and flossing. Your new teeth require the same maintenance that natural teeth do to prevent any complications.
