At SF Oral Surgery, our story is one of heart, heritage, and healing.
In 1979, Dr. William Chan opened a small practice in San Francisco—not just with the goal of treating patients, but with the intention to care for people in a way that honored who they are, where they came from, and what they needed most. He believed that exceptional care starts with seeing the whole person.
As the first Chinese American oral surgeon to open a practice in San Francisco, he started a tradition rooted in kindness, humility, and generosity. His office became a place where families from all backgrounds felt safe, listened to, and truly cared for.
Born in Guangzhou, China, and initially arriving in Alabama on his own at the age of 12 before rejoining his family in San Francisco, Dr. Chan knew what it felt like to navigate unfamiliar worlds. That journey shaped him—his compassion, his patience, and his lifelong commitment to making others feel at home, even in a clinical setting. After completing his dental and surgical training at UCSF, he devoted himself to serving its communities.
In those early days on Van Ness Avenue, the office was small, but the impact was large. Referring dentists admired his integrity. Patients often recalled his warmth.
Dr. Chan’s dedication reached beyond his office, and as a clinical professor at UCSF he mentored a generation of future surgeons. He showed them that surgery is about being present, being kind, and always treating people with dignity.
Though Dr. Chan has since stepped back from daily practice, his legacy continues. For the past 20+ years, his son, Dr. Michael Chan has continued the work his father began with the same values, the same deep care for the community, and a heartfelt commitment to every patient who walks through the door.
Dr. Michael Chan’s leadership has broadened the practice into a modern and trusted destination for care. New technology, advanced procedures, and a larger team have expanded what we offer. But the spirit of the practice remains grounded in the same principles his father taught him. Listen closely. Care deeply. Treat every person like family.
Many of the patients we care for today first came to us as children, and now, years later, they return with children of their own, trusting us once again to care for their families. That kind of trust isn’t built overnight. It grows quietly, over time, through trust and lasting relationships. This is what legacy truly means—not just years passed, but connection carried forward through generations.
Our patient community continues to reflect the vibrant heart of San Francisco. Many speak Cantonese, Mandarin, or Spanish. Each is met with the same patience, and thoughtful care that Dr. Chan instilled from the beginning.
Throughout our office, you’ll find photos and mementos that reflect Dr. Chan’s love of travel and adventure. But more importantly, you’ll experience the warmth and attentiveness he instilled in us—in the way we welcome each person, take time to explain every step, and stay connected even after your visit is complete.
In his retirement, Dr. William Chan enjoys traveling and cherishing time with his wife, Gayle, and their four grandchildren. He remains active in the community through volunteer work and continues to mentor young dentists and oral surgeons, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation. Dr. Chan finds great fulfillment in giving back, supporting local organizations such as the Rotary Club, Gum Moon, and TACT, and staying connected to the community that has meant so much to him throughout his life.
To those who’ve been with us for many years, thank you for trusting us with your health and the well-being of your family. To those just getting to know us, welcome to a practice where care is personal, and community is everything.
And to Dr. William Chan—thank you for teaching us with such patience and kindness. Your impact goes beyond your professional accomplishments; it lives on in the legacy you’ve created and the lives you’ve touched..
